Cookie

Cookies are small files of text that contain a certain quantity of information exchanged between the website and the user’s terminal (usually the browser). They are mainly used to allow websites to function and make them function more efficiently, as well as to supply information to the owners of the site itself. Cookies can be distinguished, depending on the objective pursued by who uses them, into technical cookies and profiling cookies.

Technical cookies are those which are used in order to make the websites function and to make them function more efficiently, as well as to supply information (in aggregated form) to the owners of the site itself. They can be divided into: (i) navigation cookies which ensure the normal navigation and usability of the website; (ii) analytical cookies which are comparable to technical cookies when directly used by the website manager to collect information (in aggregate form) on the number of users and how the website is being visited; (iii) functional cookies which enable user navigation as a function of a series of selected criteria (for example, language), with the aim of improving the service. The installation of these cookies does not require user consent.

Profiling cookies are those aimed at creating profiles of the users and are used for the purpose of sending advertising messages in line with the preferences demonstrated by the user. The installation of these cookies requires the consent of the user. The cookies can be installed by the manager of the website that the user is visiting (cookies of the first party) or by the manager of a different website (third party cookies).

The cookies can last for individual sessions or be persistent. Session cookies remain memorized in the terminal for a brief time and are eliminated as soon as the user shuts the browser. Their use is strictly limited to the transmission of session identifiers (constituted by the incidental numbers generated by the server) needed for the secure and efficient exploration of the website.

Persistent cookies remain archived in the user’s terminal until a predetermined expiration date. These, not being cancelled directly by shutting the browser, enable the memorization of the user’s choices on their own website as well as collecting information about the pages visited by the user, the frequency of visits to the website and to identify the user’s navigation trajectory, with the aim of enhancing the experience of the present website.
